Trading him away for the right to overpay a player with a limited market was simply foolish. Playing Mobley next to Allen was always going to be a tricky situation. Mobley may not have the body necessary to man the center position in his rookie year but his ceiling as a player will be reached with him playing the five. As a whole, the Cavs may have sacrificed their future for the chance to win a handful of more games the next couple of seasons.
Despite an impressive late-season run by Anthony Edwards, this team appears to be heading nowhere fast. The recent trade of Jarrett Culver was an admission by the team that they blew the pick. Malik Beasley can score but he projects as a scoring sixth man off the bench for a good team. Even if Anthony Edwards takes a significant leap forward, it is hard to imagine a scenario in which the Wolves can generate consistent stops on defense. A Karl-Anthony Towns trade may be the best path forward for this team.
If they were smart, they would explore the market for him now rather than wait for him to make a trade demand and significantly reduce what they might be able to get back in a trade. The Rockets are a beautiful mish-mash of intriguing young players and aging vets. Jalen Green showed why many scouts were high on him entering the draft. At the moment, Kevin Porter Jr. It will be interesting to monitor how active Houston is on the trade market.
One would expect Eric Gordon and Danuel House to be moved before the trade deadline. If packaged together, they should be able to command a reasonably protected first round pick. John Wall is an interesting player to watch. Like Kemba Walker, would he be willing to give a significant amount of money back in order to choose his next destination? What about Wood? The Rockets appear to be two to three years away from serious contention. Basically, the teams in each division with the worst record would flip a coin to determine who would have the first pick.
The coin flip system was used until when it was thought by many that the Houston Rockets were deliberately losing games to get to the coin flip, and possibly the first pick. In , the lottery system was born. It began with each non-playoff team having an envelope placed in a large spinning hopper and the envelopes being pulled out in the order of the draft.
During the first time the lottery was used, big controversy arose. The system was tweaked a little bit until it was replaced all together by seemingly more reliable ping-pong balls that are used today.
In , the first year that the lottery system was used, the New York Knicks struck it rich and won the first overall pick which they used to draft Georgetown Center, Patrick Ewing.
Video replay from the draft showed that as most of the envelopes were placed into the hopper, one was slammed against the inner wall. As Stern drew out the envelope that would determine the first pick, it was obvious that the corner was bent on the envelope that happened to be for the Knicks. It actually makes sense that the league would want the biggest star in the draft to play in the biggest market and on it's biggest stage.
Had teams such as the Pacers , Sonics, Hawks or Kings won the lottery, it would have sent the best player in the draft to a smaller market with much less exposure and potential to make money for the league.
Ironically, the whole planned backfired as the Knicks did not win a championship with Ewing, and the 13th player drafted turned out to be better than Ewing.
Click here to watch video of the lottery. Heading into the draft lottery, the Boston Celtics had just endured one of the worst seasons in their history. They ended the year just 15 total wins which was one game behind the Grizzlies for the worst record in the league.
Rumor has it that a group including the Spike Lee and commissioner David Stern could not bear to see the Celtics win the draft lottery and have the chance to draft Tim Duncan out of Wake Forest.
Many feel that the lottery was again fixed so that the neither the Grizzlies or the Celtics got the first pick. Instead, the San Antonio Spurs were awarded the pick despite having the third-worst record. With Duncan, the Spurs have gone on to win multiple championships and he is regarded as the best power forward to play the game.
The lottery machine is manufactured by the Smart Play Company, a leading manufacturer of state lottery machines throughout the United States. Smart Play also weighs, measures and certifies the ping-pong balls before the drawing. The drawing process occurs in the following manner: All 14 balls are placed in the lottery machine and they are mixed for 20 seconds, and then the first ball is removed.
The remaining balls are mixed in the lottery machine for another 10 seconds, and then the second ball is drawn. There is a second mix, and then the third ball is drawn. There is a second mix, and then the fourth ball is drawn.
The team that has been assigned that combination will receive the No. The same process is repeated with the same ping-pong balls and lottery machine for the second through fourth picks. If the same team comes up more than once, the result is discarded and another four-ball combination is selected. Also, if the one unassigned combination is drawn, the result is discarded and the balls are drawn again. The length of time the balls are mixed is monitored by a timekeeper who faces away from the machine and signals the machine operator after the appropriate amount of time has elapsed.
Representatives from each participating team will join virtually. Neither the Deputy Commissioner nor the virtual team representatives will be informed of the lottery results before the envelopes are opened. The team whose logo is in the last envelope opened will have the No. Below are the individuals who will represent their respective teams. So grabbing Onyeka Okongwu at No. Is it a reach? Maybe both! This draft has at least three No. Nonetheless, perhaps Okongwu unlocks the Wolves and takes them to a new level.
He's a defensive monster who can defend from paint to perimeter, and he's ultra-skilled as a post scorer, too. His skill set should set up to perfectly complement what they already have in place in Minnesota, and the hefty price to maximize Karl-Anthony Towns and D'Angelo Russell might be worth it. They also addressed their center position via free agency by adding Clint Capela. So here they add to that blend with a strong, versatile wing in Okoro. His range in this draft is somewhere between , so perhaps the Hawks can move out of this spot and still find him in a trade-down scenario.
Either way, he's a defensive menace whose skill set is plug-and-play as a high-level role player. Detroit's future at the point guard position is most uncertain. Derrick Rose is entering the second season of a two-year deal but is "not the future of the team," as coach Dwane Casey recently told MLive. Brandon Knight is a capable guard but not a franchise building block. Ditto for Bruce Brown. Ball is the upside play that not only addresses its hole at the position, but is also the biggest potential boom.
If he hits in the way he could , grows into his frame and develops his shot, the youngest Ball brother could be a multi-time All-Star that helps reposition the Pistons in the East.
