Sunabozu is also very greedy - he's interested only in the money. He betrays his friends in the end by helping the government of the Kanto desert just because they pay more he tells that he had no choice and he will get a better life. But despite his pervert-ness and greed, he's a real nutter.
In the episode "Tank and the machine gun" he defeats the "Dragon Kong" the hovertank by standing in the front of him till the last moment and shoots in the rock above the tank. To retake the village after Tsutomu Mukai 's efforts fail, he decides to let the 8th Army join the mission and debut on the battlefield. Kanta has very little intel to work with, but he manages to scout the area and find the fleeing Southerners, so he has the cyborgs massacre all the Southerners with ease and avoid Southern artillery.
After this, his troops recapture D-3, making the 8th Army's debut a success. The war between West and South begins, and Kanta meets up with Junko after his victory to collaborate. Some time during the war, he takes Tsurara as an underling in his army. When Kanta first meets Kosuna, he begrudgingly shares his supplies with her and think she is just a wandering traveler.
After Kanta defeats the Shimmer Sniper, Kosuna begs him to take her as an apprentice, but Kanta is annoyed and leaves her behind. Later on, Kosuna saves Desert Punk from a bandit holding him at gunpoint, and Kanta recognizes her. He still rejects her pleas for apprenticeship, but he reconsiders when she shows him a picture of a big-breasted woman who is allegedly Kosuna's mom the picture is actually from a smutty magazine.
During her apprenticeship, Kanta gives her an M79 for a firearm, and he treats her horribly. Eventually, Kanta gains respect for her because of her adamant personality, and he declares her an official mercenary. After Kaizuka's robot soldiers are sold to the highest bidder and Kanta switches sides, Kosuna decides she cannot side with her former master since she would just remain a sidekick, and that would prevent her from becoming the Kanto Desert's number one skilled beauty.
In the beginning of the series, Kanta is very distrustful of Junko since she tricked him the first time they met, and she usually has ulterior motives or betrays him in the end. Kanta nevertheless gets jealous of other people who have their eyes on Junko, as he did when she told him that Seiji Tanigawa wanted to force her into marriage.
Later in the series, Kanta and Junko work together and have a relationship, but it is unknown if the two of them have consummated their relationship. Kanta and Rain Spider are a foil to each other, having the same strength and strategies and not being able to beat the other. They admire each other's strength and have the same capabilities. Nonetheless, they are far from friends and they are always on opposite sides of conflict, including their first fight and far later in the war between the South and West Oases.
Kanta grew up with the three brothers and had them do bad things with him, including theft and bullying other children like Kouji Kawazu.
After the brothers find out about what Kanta did to their sister, they beat him up, and their relationship with him has been hatred ever since. Of the three brothers, Kanta dislikes Akio Kawaguchi the most.

User reviews 8 Review. Top review. Excellent, lesser known series. First off, if you buy the DVD's, switch the voices over to Japanese and put the subtitles on as you would with most imports. Occasionally, you stumble across a reasonably good dub, but this one just isn't close enough to be quite as enjoyable as the original, IMHO.
The original Japanese voice actors did a remarkable job giving the characters quite a bit of depth, and the English VAs just came across as flat. The title translation to "Desert Punk" is an odd translation of the original title as well Sunabozu meaning, roughly, "Sand Monk".
Masked by silly, decidedly adult humor is a reasonably original story and plot. The setting has a bit of a Trigun-like feel to it, but probably more of a Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic basis. However, the real strength of the show is the hero, Sunabozu. Unlike the typical "powerful hero rising up to fight evil overlord" types that dominate Japanese animation, you have a character that is the quintessential survivor.
He is a true rogue. He's egotistical, cunning, virtually amoral, and incredibly selfish. A thoroughly disgusting person.
However, he's also incredibly insightful, quick-witted, and a remarkably entertaining character through and through. The comparisons with Lupin The Third are shallow, and mainly based solely on both characters' similar woman preferences. Lupin was mainly motivated by money and large-breasted women, and while on the surface that seems to be the same case with Mizuna Kanta, there's a lot more to it than that, and his character is unraveled throughout the course of the series.
The character designs are very different than your typical Japanese fare There are a smattering of highly attractive people mixed in with generally plain to ugly folks everywhere. In a lot of ways, this gives it a greater sense of realism, while defining characters a lot more clearly you can immediately sense who the suckers are, who the pretty boys are, who the bad guys are, and which women Sunabozu will attempt to bribe into having sex with him right off the bat.
For those who are bored with the typical eye candy, the artwork and character designs are very refreshing. The opening and ending music initially seem like very odd choices, but they fit the series. There's a lot about Sunabozu that just works, if you question it, then you probably just don't get it yet.
